Description

This Balsamic-Thyme Potato Torte features thinly sliced Yukon Gold potatoes layered with fresh thyme, garlic, olive oil, and tangy balsamic vinegar. Baked until golden and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this elegant potato side dish is perfect for family dinners, holiday gatherings, and special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale

2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes

¼ cup balsamic vinegar

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch round baking dish with olive oil.

Step 2: Prepare the Potatoes

Wash the potatoes thoroughly and peel them if desired. Slice into approximately ⅛-inch-thick rounds using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer.

Step 3: Prepare the Balsamic-Thyme Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine balsamic vinegar, olive oil, minced garlic, fresh thyme, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until evenly combined.

Step 4: Arrange the Potato Layers

Arrange the potato slices in overlapping circles inside the prepared baking dish. Brush the balsamic-thyme mixture between each layer. Continue until all potatoes are used, pressing gently to create a compact structure.

Step 5: Bake the Potato Torte

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired, and bake uncovered for another 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender and golden brown.

Step 6: Rest and Serve

Remove the potato torte from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Slice into wedges, garnish with fresh thyme, and serve warm.

Notes

Use Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamy interior and buttery flavor.

Slice potatoes evenly to ensure consistent cooking.

Pat wet potatoes dry before layering to encourage crispiness.

Use fresh thyme for the best herbal aroma.

Parmesan cheese is optional and can be omitted for a dairy-free version.

For extra crispy edges, bake uncovered during the final minutes.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until thoroughly heated.
