Description
Pretzel chicken mustard cheddar is the perfect comfort food—crispy pretzel-crusted chicken smothered in a creamy cheddar mustard sauce. Bold, crunchy, and ready in under 30 minutes.
Ingredients
2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 cup crushed pretzels
2 large eggs, beaten
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon flour (for roux)
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying, optional)
Instructions
Slice each chicken breast in half lengthwise to create 4 thinner cutlets
Pound to even thickness and season both sides with salt, pepper, and paprika
Set up a dredging station with three bowls: flour, beaten eggs, and crushed pretzels
Coat each piece of chicken in flour, then dip in egg, and finally press into pretzels
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat (or preheat oven to 400°F)
Cook chicken until golden and cooked through, 4–5 minutes per side (or bake 18–22 minutes)
To make the sauce, melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour to form a roux
Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until smooth and thickened
Stir in cheddar cheese and mustard, mix until melted and creamy
Plate chicken and drizzle with cheddar mustard sauce
Garnish with chopped parsley and serve immediately
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and pretzels. Sauce can be adjusted with additional mustard or spice for more heat. Great with roasted veggies, mashed potatoes, or on pretzel buns as sliders.
